The Explorer’s fuel economy ranges from 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway in front-wheel-drive four-cylinder models to 16/22 mpg city/highway in all-wheel-drive V6 models, according to the EPA. The Explorer handles well, but rivals like the Mazda CX-9 and the Ford Flex are better. Front-wheel drive is standard – except in the Sport trim, which has four-wheel drive. The top-of-the-line Sport trim comes only with a six-cylinder EcoBoost engine that makes 365 horsepower. Used 2013 Ford Explorer Performance and InteriorĪ 290-horsepower V6 engine is standard, and a 240-horsepower, turbocharged four-cylinder EcoBoost engine is available in all but the Sport trim. While the Explorer’s safety and ownership cost are above average, there’s little cargo space and few standard interior features.
